Faculty structure
Physical department began to functionate as a part of physico-mathematical department since foundation of the University in 1919 and transformed into independent department – Physical department in 1958. The great contribution to the creation and development of the department made M. Aliyev, R. Huseynov, M. Sardarli, K. Kocharli, A. Mukhtarov and other prominent Azerbaijanian pedagogues. Famous physicist, Nobel prize winner L.D. Landau was educated at this department in 1922-1924. Among the graduating students of this department we can name the president of National Akademy of Sciences of Azerbaijan M.K. Karimov, akademicians – N.A. Quliyev, E.U. Salayev, F.M. Hashimzadeh, B.M. Askerov, corresponding members – A.I. Mukhtarov, S.A. Hajiyev, Y.S. Seyidov, V.I. Tairov, R.E. Huseynov, professor of Moscow State University B.K. Kazimov, ambassador of Azerbaijan Republic in the USA H.M. Pashayev and other renowned men.

Scientific investigations are carried out at the department accordingly to a modern level of scientific development.
Research works are carried out in nanoelectronics, the last achievement in science, also nuclear magnet resonance methods are widely used, patents are received as a result of intensive researches.

Successes of students of the department
At the department 10 young investigators gave talks in “ Post-graduates 9th Republic Scientific Conference” hold by Education Ministry of Azerbaijan Republic; 14 fourth-year students gave talks in “Highes school students 19th republic Scientific Conference; 3 young investigators, 56 masters and 2 students gave talks in “Young physicist-2003, young investigators, masters and students Scientific Conference”. The thesis of their talks were published. 4 students took part in “Quantum Particles and Fields -3” International Workshop, hold in Baku, September 13-17, 2004.
Successes in preparation of grants and projects:
Officials of the department professor A.H. Kazimzadeh, having got encouragement of World Bank took part in project “Development of professional level of teachers” hold by Education Ministry and Candidate of physical-mathematical science A.I. Akhmedov first took part in “International Seminar on elementary charged particles physics” hold by International Theoretical Physics Centre by name Abdus Salam in Triest, Italy, June 13-Luly 6, 2003, then he took part in “String seminar and workshop” in Anzal, Iran Islamic Republic, September 27-October 11, 2003, and at last he won 3-years grant NATO (Reintegration) for 2004-2006.
Candidate of physical-mathematical science Sh. S. Agayev won grant NATO in 2003-2004. He went on an official journey to France, Institute of Nuclear Investigations on October 2, 2003-June 15, 2004.
