1. A history of Department

The Department of semiconductors physics of Baku State University is created 1958 under the initiative and a direct management of academician G.B.Abdullaeva and played a significant role in the field of development of physics of semiconductors in republic. For last years on Department cooperated a number of the scientists known in the field of semiconductors physics, in particular academician G.B.Abdullaev, academician M.I.Aliev, a member of the correspondent.NASA, prof. V.I.Tagirov, the honored worker of a science, prof.B.R.Mirzoev, prof.G.A.Akhundov, prof.A.E.Bakhyshov, prof.А.G.Кyazym-zade, prof.V.M.Salmanov, prof.A.Sh.Abdinov, prof.A.Z.Abasova, prof.M.M.Panahov, prof.N.M.Gasanly, prof.R.A.Suleymanov, prof.A.O.Aliev and others. Many of them now continue to work on Department.

For the expired years academician G.B.Abdullaev (1958-1959), the honored worker of a science, prof.B.R.Mirzoev (1960-1969), the doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, prof.G.A.Akhundov (1970-1973), a member of the correspondent. NАSА, prof.V.I.Tagirov (1974-1990), the doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, prof.F.E.Faradzhev (1991-1995) supervised on Department. Since 1996 the doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, prof. A.G.Kyazym-zade supervises on Department.

For last years on Department scientific-research works in various areas of semiconductors physics are carried out, prepared by tens doctors and candidates of sciences. Employees of Departments publish hundreds scientific articles in authoritative republican and international magazines, monographies, textbooks and educationalmanuals at the areas of general and semiconductors physics are prepared. Scientific activity of Department are repeatedly marked by the state bodies, employees of Department are awarded with awards, medals and creditable letters.

2. Structure of Department.

On Department educational laboratories of a basis of physics of semiconductors, semiconductor devices, optical and photoelectrical properties of semiconductors, technology of semiconductors, and also research laboratories “Semiconductor devices and nonlinear optics”, “Kinetic effects in semiconductors”, “Optics of semiconductors and phase transitions” function.

Now under the list of staff on Department 7 person from professor - teaching structure, 4 persons from auxiliary structure and 1 person 0,5 staff in combination work. The speciality 8 persons from professor - teaching structure corresponds to a speciality 01.04.10 - Physics of semiconductors and insulates. The auxiliary structure will consist of 1 managing laboratory, 1 leading research assistant and 2 research assistant.

4. Scientific activity of Department

For the expired years the scientific direction of Department has been connected to research of electric, optical, photoelectric and luminescent properties of the complex semiconductors received on the basis of I, III and VI groups elements. As a result of carried out longstanding researches monocrystals of layered compounds such as А3B6 and their solid solutions are prepared, features of electric, optical, photoelectric and luminescent properties of these crystals are investigated. In particular are in details investigated influence large-scale heterogeneous, arising in these crystals, on their electronic properties, features of interaction of laser radiation with these materials are determined, found out a number of the new physical phenomena. Further threefold analogues of these crystals are investigated, detailed information about electron and fonon processes occuring in them are received. Besides it, in the various periods physical properties of selenic rectifiers, Ge-Si and Sb2S3-Sb2Se3solid solutions, SbSI crystals are investigated and significant scientific results are prepared.

Since 70-th years of the last century, on Department carrying out researches semiconductor diod structures and heterojunctions the basis of layered compounds such as А3B6. It is shown, that heterojunctions, manufactured by the method of optical contact landing are well described by the Anderson model that allowed to modeling a number of the physical phenomena on their basis.

On Department intensive researches are carried out also in the field of search of new complex semiconductors. To employees of Department it is proved existence of new semiconductor compounds such as АI3BIII5CVI9, the opportunity of formation of 45 threefold compounds in this system is shown, monocrystals of many of them are prepaared and their physical properties are investigated. The method of alloy manufacturing is offered, allowing to remove supercooling at the front crystallization for preparation of binary solid solutions with strong segregation. The preparation method of the perfect crystals of binary solid solutions with application of the having alloy made in the new way is developed, the perfect monocrystals of solid solutions Ge-Si are prepaared.

Results of research works now are used in educational process. These results are used in a number of monographies and reviews.

5. Educational work of Department

The professor - teaching structure of Department at a high level read the lectures from general rate of physics and various area of physics of semiconductors at physical and chemical faculty, carry out seminars and laboratory cours. Besides a bachelor degree on Department are carried out preparation of masters on speciality TEM 03.00.06 - Physics of semiconductors and TEM - 03.00.30 - Semiconductor devices and microelectronics.

Curriculums in all subjects, stipulated in curricula are prepared and authorized on the Academic Council. Educational process in all subjects are carried out in conformity of scheduling plans. Since 1996 under the initiative of Department it is open a speciality «Applied physics» at physical faculty.

The Department is authorized as base Department for increase of a speciality. Every year some teachers from other organizations pass training on Department.

7. Foreign communications

For the expired years employees of Department supported connections and carried out joint research works with many republics and centres of science of former Soviet Union, and also with centres of science and Universities of Iran, Turkey, Germany, England, Slovakia and other countries. Outstanding scientists of the various countries are repeatedly invited and their reports on pressing questions of physics of semiconductors are heard. On Department the scientific staff for lines of foreign countries (the Arabian Republic Egypt, Afghanistan, Korea, Uzbekistan, Islamic Republic of Iran, etc.) are prepared. Now on faculty 2 post-graduate students 1 master from Islamic Republic of Iran are trained.

The prepared by employees scientific results repeatedly were reported on the international symposiums and the conferences spent in a number of foreign countries, including in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Uzbekistan, Georgia, America, Germany, England, France, Japan, Poland, Iran, Turkey and other countries. Since 2002 prof. A.G.Kyazym-zade participated in carrying out of projects on educational reform on support of the World Bank.

8. Training of specialists

For the expired years on Department 10 doctors, more than 50 candidates of sciences on a speciality 01.04.10 - Physics of semiconductors and insulatorand 01.04.07 – Solid State Physics and 47 masters are prepared. Now on faculty 13 masters are prepared, 2 post-graduate students from Islamic Republic Iran conduct research work for reception of a scientific degree of the candidate of physical and mathematical sciences.

  1. By order of the President of the Republic prof.A.Kyazym-Zade was awarded the honorary title "Honored Worker of Science" and prof.V.Salmanov awarded the honorary title "Honored Teacher".
  2. As the leading organization for the Department discussed the 2 theses submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
  3. One article prof.A.Kyazym-zade and prof.V.Salmanov published in the journal "Physics and Techniques of Semiconductors" (2010, № -3, St. Petersburg), which belongs to the category of "Science citation index", and another article accepted published in the journal "Inorganic Materials" (2010, № -6, Moscow) in the same category.
  4. Corresponding member of NASA, prof. V. Tagirov one opposed the thesis submitted for the Ph.D., and professor. A.Kyazym-zade 2 opposed the thesis submitted for the degree of Ph.D., and Doctor of Science, respectively.
  5. Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Jafarov Maarif Ali oglu hired for the post of Professor of 0,5 state.
  6. Prof.A.Kyazym-zade, has won a grant to assist consultancy service on the project "Modernization of the additional education system of teachers”, the World Bank's Development Projects of the Education Sector.
